When you think of waves you would think of the ocean. A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from place to place. A moving object can transfer energy to a medium, producing waves. Well, there are actually all different kinds of waves. A mechanical wave is one that requires a medium through which to travel. Mechanical waves are produced when a source of energy causes a medium to vibrate. These waves are classified by how they move. Another type of wave is a tranverse wave which is a wave that moves the medium at right angles to the direction in which the waves travel. Also, a longitudinal wave moves the medium parallel to the direction in which the waves travel. An example of a longitudinal wave is sound.The highest part of the wave is the crest.The lowest part of the wave is the trough. The length between one crest to another is called the wavelength. The mediums that waves travel through are solids, liquids, and gases. Electromagnetic waves do not need a medium to travel through.
